TESTEN AND APPROVED
We evaluate Moccamaster coffee machines across the four T’s of coffee brewing: temperature, time, turbulence, and total dissolved solids (TDS). A machine that performs within the ideal ranges of the four T’s produces the perfect ratio of coffee flavour compounds extracted into water, which the SCA refers to as “the golden cup”. That ratio creates the flavours we enjoy when we sit back with a good cup of coffee, and every Moccamaster hits that mark every brew cycle.
- SCA & ECBC approved

I have to do a review on this Moccamaster coffee machine. It’s awesome. Like many of you, I did originally think that £200 for a coffee percolator was a bit steep but I have not regretted my purchase. I’m a cafetière fan and also have a £1000+ DeLonghi bean to cup machine so purchased the Moccamaster for my office which is 2 flights up from the kitchen. I wake up, press the machine on and by the time I’ve come back from letting the dog out — the coffee is ready. The coffee flavour is smooth and doesn’t leave the usual powdery sludge that you get with cafetières. It’s HOT — and I have the thermos jug version which stays HOT for about 6 hours! I’ve used it 100 times since November (pack of 100 filters has just run out) and used it with various brands of coffee inc M&S, Taylor’s, Monmouth to name a few. Each time the coffee is so nice. Brewed beautifully and no weird powdery taste that sometimes happens with other brewing methods. Highly recommended to anyone who wants a decent coffee to start the day.

I’ve wanted one of these for ages, and I’m so happy I got one.Nice easy to use machine that turns off everything other than the low power light in the switch when it has put all the water through, with a carafe that keeps coffee hot and still tasty (not stewed like coffee machines with hot plates).I had to go out to complete an assessment and left half a pot of coffee — came back almost 4 hours later and the thermal carafe (proper mirrored glass vacuum flask) had kept it hot — hot enough that I couldn’t just gulp it down — very impressive.Makes wonderful coffee, uses standard, readily available filters, and it keeps it hot without stewing it or wasting electricityUPDATE…This weekend my other half knocked the carafe off of the worktop into our concrete tiled floor… Knowing it has a glass thermos liner, she was convinced it must be broken — it hadn’t even dented the surface of the stainless steel outer or the plastic bits. The glass lining in the carafe was my one worry regarding the longevity of the machine, but it seems to be pretty darn robust.I would have recommended this machine anyway, but now, I’d recommend it within any reservations

You pay a high price for the engineering in this machine, i.e. the stuff on the inside that you can’t see, but it does produce a very nice clean fresh cup of coffee. If you leave the drip lid on after brewing, then because it has vents that allow you to pour straight from the carafe, the coffee will cool more quickly. This is fine if you intend to drink it all within an hour or so. However, I tend to make a full pot of coffee in the morning and then have a few cups spread out up until lunch time, so I might brew it at 8am and still want to be able to pour a drinkably hot cup at noon. By using the alternate lid that comes with the jug, you can seal it so the heat doesn’t escape…it does become more of a thermos and you end up with good coffee for several hours and the last cup is just as good as (and almost as hot as) the first. The big difference between filter/drip machines and say a french press, is that the water passes through the grounds more quickly, rather than steeping the coffee grounds. You end up with a drink that is lighter and fresher and allows you to pick up on the more subtle elements of the roast. If you want a more robust taste then you can add more grounds, but it’s something to experiment with. The coffee from this machine is clear of any residue and has zero bitterness. I like my coffee to taste refreshing rather than robust, so I’m very happy with the results. I also prefer a vacuum jug to a glass carafe on a hotplate. Any hotplate will damage the coffee’s flavour after 20-40 minutes, but a vacuum jug keeps it pretty much very drinkable for much longer. The steel jug does not taint the flavour…at least I can’t detect any issues on that score. Also, of course, a steel jug is not going to be as fragile as a glass one.Overall, I’m very pleased with this machine and the 5-year limited warranty is a big bonus. This replaces a previous machine that cost £40. It made great coffee but the glass jug broke after just 6 months and I couldn’t get a replacement, so the machine is now useless. You can get very good vacuum jug machines for a much lower price, of course, so I reckon the Moccamaster is only for those who put a particular store on the engineering etc. There’s no guarantee that it will make the perfect cup of coffee to suit your personal taste.

I love it so much

Previously had a De Longhi drip machine for about 6 years before it stopped working. After a bit of research I opted for this machine with the thermal jug. I have owned it for two years now and use it every day. I brew a jug at 6:30am and my wife has her still hot coffee at around 7:30. A wee tip if you are making a small amount is to warm the flask before use.Makes great tasting coffee.

You get what you pay for. Brews fantastic coffee that comes out hot and stays hot for hours in the supplied carafe. The build of the machine screams quality. Comes with a 5-year guarantee. I’ve tried numerous bean to cup machines right up to the £800 Melitta F750-202 BARISTA TS (which incidentally had to be sent back for replacement three times until I gave up). This machine beats them all. Yes its expensive, but the investment is worth every penny. Buy it and pair it with a decent grinder.[22/05/18] Ok so a few months later I thought I’d add an update. This machine is fantastic. It’s made really good hot coffee every time, absolutely faultless. Superb build quality and just so consistent. Ok its expensive, but this is an investment I’ve definitely not regretted.

Perfect. I was a bit put off buying this as there is no timer, but I just plugged it into a Smart Plug and now I can easily set it on a timer or operate it directly from my phone while lying in bed. The coffee is great and remains hot for hours. I had previously bought a SMEG but the coffee was always lukewarm, this is far far better.

This machine makes excellent filter coffee. It’s a very well engineered machine that has been built to last with spare parts available. The transparent water tank makes it straightforward to fill to the appropriate water level. The brewed coffee is kept hot in the supplied stainless steel jug.A few sample filter papers are supplied along with a sachet of descaling fluid.

Everything I had read prior to purchasing this coffee machine was `00% true. It makes a superlative cup of coffee. I was skeptical about some of the claims referring to the accuracy of the water temperature meaning that the coffee would be smoother without any bitterness, but this is absolutely the case. The machine is only about a week old, so maybe I am jumping the gun, but it makes such a fantastic cup of coffee that I had to write a positive review. I would recommend a thousand time over. It is not the cheapest coffee machine, but if you love your coffee, this is a bargain. You could pay half the price for a cheaper machine, but the coffee would not be close to being as good.

I work away from home and often in different locations and have therefore used a lot of different drip coffee machines. I am in no doubt whatsoever that the Moccamaster is the best one I’ve used. It is a bit pricey for a drip coffee machine, but it makes such a perfect brew every time (assuming you get the ratio of grind to water correct and grind to the size you like). Highly recommend these if you are a coffee lover, coffee snob, or just like a cool kitchen gadget as I still love watching the water bubble up the internal clear tube and listen to the machien brew away.
